The History of Childhaven

A century of caring for children

Since 1909, Childhaven has been a safe and nurturing place for children. From our earliest days as one of Seattle’s first child care centers for working mothers to our position today as a national leader in caring for abused and neglected children, we’ve healed old hurts, nurtured young lives and empowered families to break the cycle of abuse and neglect and create lifelong loving relationships.

2009—Childhaven celebrates 100 years of caring for children. Today, Childhaven serves 500 young children and their families each year in four locations. Our model Therapeutic Child Care Program has been replicated in communities throughout the state, in other parts of the United States and in Canada.

Our second century—“Through the past 100 years, this agency has constantly adapted to the needs of the community,” says Patrick Gogerty. “Childhaven is a community effort that organically changes and grows and develops and proves its effectiveness.” To continue Childhaven’s impact into its second century, he adds, will take increased community involvement. “Support it. Nurture it. Love it. Just like you do with kids.”
