“If it were not for people who cared about me and gave me the help I needed, I wouldn’t be the resilient and successful person I am today. That’s what our responsibility is for the children of Childhaven. We ensure that they have the support, care and love they deserve.”

Maria Chavez Wilcox knows what it’s like to feel scared and alone.

When she was growing up in an impoverished family in Peru, a can of tomato paste and a box of spaghetti would have to last for dinner several nights a week. Lunch might be a mustard sandwich. Never knowing if you’ll go to bed hungry or wake up warm and protected takes a drastic toll on a child.

So does abuse.

Maria’s own recovery from childhood abuse was a difficult journey – one that makes Childhaven’s mission deeply personal for her.

“If it were not for people who cared about me and gave me the help I needed, I wouldn’t be the resilient and successful person I am today,” she says. “That’s what our responsibility is for the children of Childhaven. We ensure that they have the support, care and love they deserve.”

As Childhaven's President, Maria is charged with overseeing all aspects of the agency's operations. Perhaps most importantly, she builds and nurtures relationships with everyone who is involved in keeping Childhaven viable — donors and other supporters, community members, Board members and staff.

Maria, who came to Childhaven in 2011, has 30 years experience as a nonprofit leader including 15 years as the President and CEO of United Way of Orange County. She earned a Master’s degree from Boston University.

“For more than 100 years, Childhaven has cared for vulnerable children just like I was,” Maria says. “That legacy demands a bold vision to reach even more children and more families. I envision a day when we can open our doors to every child who needs us and make an even greater impact on breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect. With the continued confidence and support of our community, I know that vision can become a reality.”
